Calendar of Events
Wednesday, April 26, 2017, 5:30 pm
On February 19, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 during World War II. During the last week in April 1942, 75 years ago this year, Berkeley residents, students, faculty and staff were among the 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent who were rounded up and imprisoned in remote locations throughout the country.
On Wednesday, April 26, 2017, we commemorate these historical events and mark the resonance of this US tragedy with current news. The events will be held at UC Berkeley and at First Church Berkeley.
Reception & Exhibit 5:30 pm
Historical images will be displayed, including photographs of the forced registration and removal of Berkeley Japanese Americans, the detention centers and concentration camps, and reproductions of news stories and government documents. The exhibit can be viewed during open hours of the Multicultural Community Center from April 21–28.
Program 6–7:15 pm
Cal graduate Sam Mihara shares his first-hand account of internment. He was incarcerated at the age of 9 with his family at the Heart Mountain concentration camp in northern Wyoming for three years.

Commemoration 7:30 pm
75 years ago, members of First Congregational Church of Berkeley provided hospitality during this challenging time when men, women and children of Japanese ancestry were rounded up. A ceremony of remembrance will be held at the church, one block from the UC Berkeley campus. Join Sam Mihara, Rev. Molly Baskette, Rev. Kevin Omi and Mayor Jesse Arreguin to honor those who were forced to surrender their freedom and give up their homes, jobs and possessions. A plaque prepared by the Berkeley Historical Society describing the church's role will also be dedicated.
